Tonga baskets are winnowing baskets. After maize has been ground, it is tossed on these baskets, removing husks and unwanted chaff. Tonga baskets made in Zimbabwe are characterised by their flatness, whereas the Zambian Tonga baskets are deeper with a broader square “foot”.
